The Keeping of Lent

Lent is a forty day journey. We travel with Christ to Jerusalem to be with Him in His suffering and death in order to be with Him also in His resurrection to glory.

Ash Wednesday provides the starting point, when we recall our status as 'dust of the earth', bought to life by God's creative power alone. The first two Sundays present us with the great paradox of Jesus - the man who is subject to temptation just as we are (1st Sunday) is also the Son of God, a glimpse of whose glory we share with His disciples at His transfiguration (2nd Sunday).

Easter is the traditional time for Baptism; the Sundays of Lent therefore are an intensive preparation for the baptismal liturgy at the Easter Vigil. Christ is the living water which opens the eyes of the spiritually blind to faith in Him, for He is the Resurrection and the Life to all who believe in Him.

Palm or Passion Sunday marks the end of Lenten preparation and the beginning of Holy Week, when Christ enters Jerusalem to jubilant cries of 'Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes!' - voices that were to cry 'Crucify Him!' only days later.

If our faith is not to be as fickle and week as those voices then the message of Ash Wednesday, 'Now, now - come back to me with all your hearts' must ring in our ears. We must therefore spiritually go up to Jerusalem with the Lord during Lent so that we too may be in His company eternally. This we do by making the Lenten disciplines of Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving real and alive in our own lives.

Extra Lenten Services and Groups - Tuesdays - Lent Group in the Vestry Hall at 7.30 pm.  Wednesdays - Stations of the Cross after Mass at 12.15 pm.
